Lieut. Duddy is not buried in Plains, PA. He is buried in France, and this is a cenotaph, or memorial, as Plains historian Bob Corcoran explained to me at Sacred Heart Cemetery last week. Below you can read Lieut. Duddy's story from an August 27, 1919 Welcome Home Celebration booklet in honor of the returning soldiers. Lieut. Duddy's portrait and one of my great uncle John Curry hung together in a Plains High School for many years. Click on either image to enlarge.

Thanks, Mike. Are you related to Lt. Duddy? Do you know Bob Corcoran, by the way? Best, Jim

Jim,
I just received an email from the a gentlemen at The Overseas Monument Commission. He informs me that my great uncle Lt. Michael Duddy is not buried overseas.I think I recall as a child seeing a smaller grave marker, in the Sacred Heart Cemetary in Plains, but all these years later can not be certain. I shall let you know if I find anything.
Thank you so much for your dedication and hard work. I am glad my great uncle is not forgotten.
Sincerely,
E. Gail Duddy

Thanks for writing, Gail. My understanding was your great uncle was buried overseas, but sounds like that's incorrect. He's probably buried in Plains. Here is a picture of the gravestone, if you go to this link.

You may want to touch base with my friend Bob Corcoran. He's a member of the American Legion in Plains and has great info. His number is 570 825 5116. He may know about a portrait of Lt. Duddy that used to hang in the high school there.

Hello, thanks for your great research. Lt. Michael duddy is my great great uncle. I was wondering if any of his personal military items are on display in plains. I heard a VFW might have his medals. I would really love to see them. My mom is a duddy from north main st. In plains. Thanks

Gail and Paul, so happy you saw the posts. I do not know if there are any of Lt. Duddy's military items on display, but I believe there is a portrait of him that is going to hang in the American Legion there. I recommend you reach out to Bob Corcoran. Bob and his wife Rose live in my Great Grandmother's old house in Plains, and is a historian of the era and, along with his son Bobby, keeper of the flame. In case you haven't seen it, here is a link to a post about the portraits: http://www.jimnolansblog.com/2012/07/lt-curry-and-lt-duddy-resolution-in-memoriam.html
Bob's email address, via Rose: [email protected]
I think Bob was hoping to hear from some Duddys, I bet he knows your family. I hope we can meet some day in Plains, perhaps when the portraits are formally hung at the Legion Hall. Thank you for writing, and if there's any way I can help, please let me know.
