The top is a panel from a piece by Isabella Bannerman called, "As a Child She Devoured Cartoon Collections." It appeared in a 2002 Trina Robbins-edited collection called She Draw Comics. Isabella is relating how she sat on the heating grate on cold Buffalo days to stay warm and cozy. I just came across the other photo from about 1938 of my mother Christa Paul eating lunch by what in Sweden is called a "Kakelugn," or ceramic fireplace. This may be a German version in Berlin. They are warm and toasty, too. To see how they are made, and how lovely the rounded Swedish ones are, visit this terrific website by Valter Pettersson Islander of Rönninge, Sweden.

That tiled fireplace is nice looking. I think they had the same kind of thing in Holland?

Wow. Gobsmacked by memories seeing that heating grate. I think I may have already mentioned that the old Henry Homestead had those. We cousins used to gather around the one upstairs so we could eavesdrop on the grownups playing poker at the kitchen table directly below us. Those grates were good at conducting sound, too!
