From Matt Conrad, a postcard sent in Oct. 1917 from Lieut. Duddy to his brother Patrick from (I believe) Ft. Niagara, NY training camp. Lieut. Duddy was killed in action on August 12, 1918 in Fismes, France. Like my great uncle, Lieut. John Curry, he was from Plains, PA. Today their portraits hang in the Plains American Legion Hall.
I can't exactly make out what the postcard says, here's the best I can do:
"After three days being in the trenches ... need a shave. Jopling was in charge of the whole thing. M.J.D."
On the photo, "Johnny" is written over one of the soldiers, and maybe there was once writing over the others as well. Matt believes Lieut. Duddy is one of the soldiers in the photo. To me the soldier in the foreground looks like him.
Thanks, Matt, for sharing this reminder of an American hero and the great sacrifice he and his family made. He will never be forgotten.
